But on 4% grades and 18" radius curves, the superelevation, especially when negative, does become noticeable. Don't ask me how I know this.

The engine frames need some filing to accomodate the tight curves. A single good engine (without traction tires) can easily pull 12 cars on the steep inclines with no problem.
